France Mihelic, Virmase (Skofja Loka), Slovenia, 1907 - 1998. He studied art at the Academy in Zagreb. In 1936 he accepted a position of teacher of drawing at a school in the city of Ptuj, Slovenia, and remained there for the following five years. After the end of the Second World War (1945) Mihelic emerged as one of the country's leading artists. His art, particularly his prints, were widely exhibited in major exhibitions in Zagreb, Paris, Rome and elsewhere.
Mihelic's graphic art became widely appreciated throughout Europe during the late 1950's and early 1960's. Practically all his work for this time concentrates upon one theme; the Kurent. From the folklore of the Ptuj-Drava region, the Kurent is a demonic, Shrovetide being that chases away winter and heralds the beginnings of spring. In Mihelic's art the Kurent is metamorphosed and abstracted into universal symbols of life and death. Such compelling archetypes are clearly present in Kurenti, one of the artist's largest and most important works of art.
