Hidden Mothers

A custom of portraiture photography, notably in Victorian times was for a concealed mother to hold or reassure her child during the photo taking, The photos were intended for cropping or masked mounting, so the hidden mother would be omitted from the final album image. However shown in original format, these images have an odd somewhat haunting appearance. (and some of the kids are pretty damn creepy in their own right too!!)
